THE EAST KENT VIEW

Whitstable lies on the main route from London to Thanet and is easily reached via the M2 and Thanet Way (A299). Although originally a self governing urban district, the town now comes under the jurisdiction of Canterbury City Council along with nearby Herne Bay.

The beautiful cathedral city and commercial centre of Canterbury lies just 8 miles south and can be accessed via the A290. The Victorian seaside resort of Herne Bay is even closer - just 5 miles along the A299 (Thanet Way) to the east. The lively Thanet town of Margate (18 miles) can be reached within 25 minutes via the A299 and A28.

The channel ports of Dover (35-40 minutes) and Folkestone (45-55 minutes) are also accessible. For both these destinations, it is better to avoid Canterbury by traveling via the A299 to Faversham and using the A2.

In fact, the A2 provides direct access to the port of Dover without having to tackle the town's one-way system. For Folkestone, it is advisable to leave the A2 at Barham crematorium and follow a country road through the attractive village of Denton and across the lovely North Downs.
