PETER CUSHING'S SEAT

Peter Cushing's Seat

Time to get serious now as we take a look at one of Whitstable's most treasured possessions.

For many years, film star Peter Cushing made Whitstable his home and he became part of our community. He loved the town and could often be seen shopping in the High Street, walking the seafront or riding his bike through the narrow streets.

Whitstable folk were keen to pay tribute. Cleverly,  they decided to name a sea view after him and they built a viewing platform for all to enjoy. That platform is located on the seaward side of Keam's Yard Car Park just a few yards west of the Horsebridge. (Note: We tend to refer to it as Cushing's View car park throughout our web site simply because most people seem to prefer it).

In 1990, Peter donated a seat to the town and this now sits proudly at the Western end of the platform. The design is intended to depict two lovers with arms entwined and one can only assume that this was prompted by the happiness he achieved with his beloved wife, Helen. The message on the plaque is simple and poignant.

Peter died  a few years later and, for his funeral, the town centre came to halt in tribute. His View, of course, lives on.
