Road Routes to Whitstable

From London, M25, Medway Towns

Approach East Kent on the M2. At the end of the motorway, proceed onto the A299 (Thanet Way). This is signposted "Margate". It is actually "straight ahead" but you need to move to the outside lane of the M2.

Follow the A299 for approximately 8 miles and take the Whitstable turn off. This is shortly after passing the petrol station and Little Chef restaurant. Take care as there is only one Whitstable exit from the A299. Miss it and you are on your way to Herne Bay!

Shortly after leaving the A299, you will encounter two roundabouts. The first merely serves a new housing estate on the left, continue straight on.

The second is the "Long Reach" roundabout. Turn left here and descend Borstal Hill into the town. The road will take you through the town centre, past the harbour and on to Tankerton.

To make life a little easier we include a road plan of the route into town from the Thanet Way.

From South Kent (Dover, Folkestone)

It is best to avoid Canterbury. Use the A2 and continue to the Brenley Corner roundabout at the beginning of the M2. At the roundabout, follow the signs for the  A299 (Thanet Way).

Once on the A299, the route is the same as that described for visitors from London (see above).

From Canterbury

Use the A290. As you approach Whitstable, you will encounter two roundabouts in quick succession. Follow the signs for the town (ie virtually straight on at both rounadabouts) and descend Borstal Hill into the town centre.

From Thanet

Use the A299 (Thanet Way). Take the Whitstable turn off.

The slip road leads to a roundabout. Turn right off this roundabout.

You will quickly reach a second roundabout (The "Long Reach" roundabout). Continue straight on and descend Borstal Hill into the town centre.
